Organ of Corti
Neonatal mouse organ of Corti culture, 3 days in vitro. Stained for Tuj1 marking neurons (red), Sox2 marking supporting cells, and DAPI. Image by Taha Jan and Mirko Scheibinger, Woods Hole, MA.
Single cell RNA sequencing analysis
Single cell transcriptomic analysis reveals cell type heterogeniety. Discrete variables analysis shows distinct cell states, and continuous variables analysis demonstrates how cells are related in pseudotime.
Whole mount preparation of the postnatal utricle shows spatial patterning of hair cells and supporting cells. Left panel: pan-supporting cell marker, sparcl1, labels all supporting cells with a subset in the striolar region co-labeled by tectorin-beta (green). Right panel: Oncomodulin (red) and tectorin-beta (green) label the striolar hair cells and supporting cells, respectively. Hair bundles are labeled for F-actin (blue).
Hair Cells & Supporting Cells
High magnification image showing co-localization of the supporting cell cytoplastic markers tectorin-beta (green) and sparcl1 (red). Hair bundles are labeled for F-actin (blue).

Research Mission

We study the mammalian inner ear by answering fundamental questions of development and regeneration and performing translational research using disease models of hearing loss. Our research aims to transform the understanding of hearing loss and identify the mechanisms that can be targeted for diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from hearing and balance impairment.
